Deal Includes Vermont-Based SunCommon
Williston, VT — August 30, 2024 — Original Clean Energy, a subsidiary of Clean Royalties, a developer and builder of solar energy and storage systems, today announced the acquisition of Williston-based iSun and its companies SunCommon, and Liberty Electric.
This acquisition and leadership transition are part of the company’s comprehensive restructuring plan to restore financial stability and pursue growth in the solar energy business across northern New England and New York state.
Original Clean Energy CEO Jeff Wolfe, one of Vermont’s early solar energy innovators who co-founded groSolar in 1998, will oversee growth, innovation, and operations at the companies.
“We will grow these companies and make it easier to adopt solar energy throughout the region,’’ Wolfe said. “Solar has never been more important or more affordable than today.
“Our committed and experienced teams have been continuing to sell and build projects for homeowners, companies and large-scale developers. Our investment will accelerate that growth.”
The new executive team brings financial strength and decades of operational expertise that will enable the companies to increase market presence by deploying more solar energy in the fight against climate change.
Kip Myrick, a long-time senior vice president at iSun, becomes president of iSun, responsible for development and construction of large-scale projects.
iSun founder Jeff Peck remains a senior advisor, leveraging his long and successful career at Peck Electric.
SunCommon, the Waterbury-based developer of residential and commercial solar systems, will retain co-founder James Moore as president.
Liberty Electric is a Salem, NH-based commercial electric and solar construction firm. Brad Spelbring becomes president of Liberty Electric. Jack Comeau, Founder, will become a Senior Advisor.
Mark Yates, an experienced operator of renewable energy and other companies worldwide, becomes chief operating officer of Original Clean Energy. Yates and Wolfe have worked together structuring and restructuring companies for six years.
Moore said the transaction allows SunCommon to stay true to its original mission.
“This is a new team with deep experience and I am excited to be a part of it,’’ Moore said. “We have a lot to do and so many exciting opportunities. We founded SunCommon to change the world for our customers and our employees. I’m glad to get back to that focus.’’
Myrick said: “This acquisition allows us to build and expand on our 50-year record of quality service to our customers with more and larger solar energy deployments.”
Wolfe said Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and New York are strong markets for energy transition development, including solar energy, energy storage, and vehicle charging.
“At their core, these companies share values and culture,” Wolfe said. “We are all aligned to combat climate change and help our customers build resilience for the future.’’
Original Clean Energy is the new owner of iSun after a bankruptcy proceeding. The bankruptcy filing was a strategic move that allows an orderly restructuring process. iSun will be rebranding as Legacy Power in the near future.
“The transition back to being a privately held company allows us to focus purely on the future,’’ Wolfe said.
